Against the grain

Actions or words that are not acceptable to others. Difficult path. Untraditional. ‘Grain’ as in wood grain must be sanded and painted with the grain, so the phrase suggests with the grain is the popular or normal method, but in this case, you are doing it differently. A highly opinionated person might speak concepts that are against the grain, that is unpopular. (Compare to Swim against the current, Bend the envelope or March to a different drummer.)

“When he started talking politics in our class, I could tell that it was against the grain of everyone’s personal thoughts.”
