DEFINITION

Mature. Grown-up. Ending ones reliance on an other’s assistance. ‘Cord’ refers to the umbilical cord and implies that one can live on their own without mother’s  help.  (Contrast with Apron strings.)

“Son you’re 30 years old, you need to move out of our house, cut the cord and start to live on your own.”
