Drop the ball

DEFINITION

Fail to handle a problem.  ‘Ball’ is used as in paying attention to a challenging situation, so to drop it is to ignore or be distracted from the main concern. (Compare to Flub.)

“I asked the Sales Manager to hire the new guy, but he dropped the ball and our competitor got him.”
