Foot in the door

DEFINITION

Gain a small opportunity upon which to build. Comes from the action of a door to door salesman who won’t let you close the door on him by sticking his foot in the way until he has given his entire sales presentation. (Compare to Sales pitch.)

“That pretty girl pays no attention to me, but she said hello to me today, so I have my foot in the door to get to know her better.”
