Get off easy

DEFINITION

Mild reprimand. Not have to pay the maximum penalty for ones guilty offense. ‘Off’ refers to punishment, so to get off easy is to have a lenient judge.

“He broke the neighbor’s window and they caught him doing it; but he just had to say he was sorry, he didn’t have to pay for it, so I guess he got off easy.”
