Get off on the wrong foot

DEFINITION

Make a bad impression. Poor beginning or introduction. ‘Wrong foot’ might apply to dancing where  you begin a dance step wrong, so get off on the wrong foot is to foolishly err. (Compare to Slip up or Pull a boner.)

“I know we got off on the wrong foot when I bumped into you, but I hope we can be friends.”
