DEFINITION

Ardent promise. To give one’s word is to pledge to keep a secret or a promise. ‘Word’ is used in the sense of one’s moral commitment. (Compare to Swear by or Keep one’ word.)

“I told dad if I could borrow the car tomorrow night, I give my word to return before midnight and he said OK.”
