DEFINITION

Renege on a promise. Change one’s allegiance such as in a battle or competition. ‘Back on’ refers to a 180 degree turn in one’s path.

“Dad promised to take us to the city this weekend, but now he denies agreeing to that, so he has gone back on his word.”
