Green with envy

DEFINITION

Jealous. Why jealousy would make one green is unknown, but the phrase is used whenever someone covets someone else’s good luck or possessions. Since we should be happy for someone’s success this term typically refers to someone who may be spiteful at someone else’s good fortune.

“Our neighbor got a new fishing boat and my dad is green with envy but he knows mom would never let him spend the money on a boat.”
