Hedge one’s bet

DEFINITION

Protect oneself with a back-up plan. Consider Plan B if first plan fails. Suggests that one is hoping for a successful outcome but areĀ  holding back full involvement in case it fails. An example would be to only bet half of your gambling winnings on a great poker hand, just in case you don’t win so as not to lose all your money.

“You can apply to Harvard, but you should hedge your bet by applying to a few other colleges too.”
