Herding cats

DEFINITION

Difficult task. Impossible job. Chaos. Cats, unlike dogs or sheep, do not coordinate their movements as a group, so to herd cats is to deal with countless different directions.  (Compare to Like nailing Jello to the wall, Square peg in a round hole, Boil the ocean, or Pushing rope.)

“Getting my five children ready for school every morning is like herding cats.”
