high and dry

DEFINITION

Abandoned. Without luck. ‘Dry’ implies a water-less well and ‘high’ does NOT imply stoned but in this case invokes being stuck on a mountain top, both situations being untenable. (Compare to Throw to the wolves or Left out in the cold.)

“Here husband left in the middle the of the night and left her high and dry.”
