Resistance.  Hit an immovable force. The phrase indicates something that is preventing your forward movement or ultimate sucess. Reached a dead end. Imagine a cartoon character on a bike running directly into a brick wall! (Compare to Comeup short, Dead on arrival or Train has left the station.)
