Lose heart

Become disillusioned. Lose interest in something previously enjoyed. Suggests that one once  had their heart’s interest in something, but now it is no longer important, perhaps a lover that has left or  a new company that has become obsolete.

“Ever since his wife died, he lost heart in working in the garden.”
