DEFINITION

Searching. Investigating. ‘Trail’ implies that there is something to be found, perhaps a solution to a conundrum or chemical test etc. so to be on the trail is to hunt down an answer. (Compare to Pillar to post, Ferret-out, Search high and low or Track down.)

“When we went to Tokyo, we were on the trail for some authentic ramen noodles.”
