Pinch pennies

DEFINITION

Miserly. An old  phrase dependent on centuries ago when a penny was of value. Pinching them implies tightly controlling them so as to not lose any coins. Ebenezer Scrooge in Dicken’s novella A Christmas Carol is an example of a  penny pincher. (Compare to Cheapskate.)
