Reduce emphasis of a topic. Attempt to lessen the impact of something, especially a problem. For example, a wife might play down the fact that her husband is 15 years older than she; a politician may play down the fact that popularity polls show a decline. (Compare to Pooh-pooh or No big deal.)

“At her elderly age, let’s play down the fact that her memory is failing.”
