Play for time

Delay an outcome or decision. Lengthen the time period awaiting new information or reinforcements. Why time is being ‘played’ is to stretch out the duration to provide added time for defense or to hide. (See Drag one’s feet).

“I knew the value of our company stock would rise, but at the board of directors meeting about the merger, I had to play for time until they  noticed the increase in our stock price.”
