Play one’s cards close to the chest

DEFINITION

Secretive. Opaque in one’s attitude or ambitions. If playing a game of poker and you fear other players seeingĀ  your cards, you would hold them close to your chest for privacy, especially if you have a winning hand. Usually suggests that someone is not willing to transmit their intentions.

“I don’t know how he is going to vote, he’s playing his cards close to his chest.”
