Allow something to reach its conclusion. ‘Play out’ is used as in being consumed or  used-up, end of the line, it implies that what is being discussed has an end period and is not eternal.

  “She’s more interested in him than in me, her affection for that guy won’t last, I’m just going to wait until it plays out.”
