Pound the pavement

DEFINITION

(Old fashioned) Search for work. ‘Pound’ is used in the sense of desperate walking and ‘pavement’ refers to a wide territory like an entire city. A policeman may also pound the pavement in their daily schedule of walking the city streets; a salesman might pound the pavement in going door-to-door to sell a product.

“The minute I was furloughed during the pandemic, I began to pound the pavement for a new job to feed my family.”
