  1. Common modifying adjective that implies satisfactory; emphasizes the subject as not perfect but above mediocre. e.g.: “Pretty good” means I’m ok, not sensational. “Pretty bad” means I’m  miserable but not ready to go to hospital or commit suicide. (Contrast with Awful.)
  2. Enlarging modifier. “Pretty nice” or Pretty neat” is above average. “Pretty scary” is very, very scary. “Pretty hard” is very difficult.
