Promise the moon

DEFINITION

Extravagant vow. An unrealistic promise. To promise the moon signals a pledge that is impossible to perform. Who would promise the moon? perhaps an overly romantic lover who will say anything to gain your love or perhaps an unscrupulous salesman who needs to make a commission off your purchase. (Compare to Pipe dream or Castles in the sky.)

“I don’t know why she ever married that never-do-well, I guess becauseĀ  he promised her the moon, and gave her an early grave instead.”
