Put words in my mouth

DEFINITION

Suggesting to someone what they mean. Speaking on behalf of  someone else, though unauthorized to do so. It is audacious to suggest to  someone what they think, but that’s the meaning of this phrase.

“The newsman asked the mayor if  he was going to resign and the mayor responded  that the reporter  should not put words in his mouth.”
