Rack one’s brain

DEFINITION

Trying hard to remember something. To rack the brain illustrates one hitting their head to find an answer or a memory. It is used when one has spent much time in working on a problem and still remains without a solution. (Compare to Put one’s thinking cap on or Plugging away.)

“I’ve racked my brain all morning and still can’t remember my high school teacher’s name.”
