Right off the bat

DEFINITION

Immediately. The first thing to occur. Something proceeded quickly at the beginning.  ‘Bat’ refers to baseball and probably signals the first pitch of the ball when the ball is hit off the bat for a run, something so instantaneous that it was shocking as baseball usually is a leisurely game.

“I met her dad  for the first time after we had dated twice and right off the bat he asked me if I planned to marry her, it was a shocking question.”
