Sacrificial lamb

One sacrificed for a group’s well being. Although the term has religious connotations as in ancient sacrifice of animals, it is commonly used to suggest the importance of giving up one thing for the benefit of many others. (Compare to Throw under the bus.)

“The school couldn’t figure out who started the fire, so the bully in class that no one likes was sent away to police as a sacrificial lamb.”
