Scrimp and save

DEFINITION

Be very frugal. Economize. The phrase implies that one is attempting to save money for some purpose and they have to cut back on living expenses to accrue money. If you leave between paychecks, you can not easily save any money as it is used each pay period for day-to-day expenses, so you must ‘scrimp’ that is, buy fewer groceries, etc. (Compare to Pinch pennies.)

“She doesn’t get paid much but over the years she scrimped and saved to buy a bike.”
