Big change. Major divergence of course or thought. The reference to the sea portrays moving into a different type of environment such as from a calm sea into a stormy sea. (Compare to Shock to the system or Turning point.)

“If  we  stop making toys in our factory and switch to making smartphones, that would be a sea change for the employees.”
