Shoot from the hip

DEFINITION

Fast and direct. Unvarnished honesty.  Speak your mind without hesitation. In old cowboy movies, to shoot from the hip was a faster way to win a gunfight, so it illustrates both a fast and a unfiltered response. Shooting from the hip can get you in trouble with  your superiors because it lacks a tactful approach. (Compare to Straight shooter or Speak one’s mind.)

“My wife asked if a certain dress made her look fat and I shot from the hip and gave  her my opinion, now I sleep in the garage!”
