Invited to attend. Participate in a conference or a dialogue. When asked to sit in on a meeting or gathering it may or may not allow you full participation, but there is reason to attend that might benefit you or the group as a whole. ‘Sit in’ implies a gathering of others sitting down for a meeting of some type.

“As the new Vice President, I want you to sit in our next board meeting.”
