Small talk

DEFINITION

Polite and casual talk. Unimportant but friendly conversation.¬† ‘Small’ implies that whatever is being discussed is of little importance. Small talk is used in polite company amongst people when a lengthy debate or deep discussion is not necessary or proper, such as at a funeral. A politician usually is proficient at small talk so as to appear to communicate with many people in a crowd without making spcific promises. (Compare to Chit chat or Schmooze.)
