Stand in for

DEFINITION

Temporarily replace someone until they return. You are ‘standing in’ the stead of someone else until they return. It could be just for a few minutes (maybe that person needed the bathroom) or it could be for months (perhaps that person is sick and recuperating).¬† (Compare to Temp.)

“Before my wedding occurred, my best man got deported, so I had to have my neighbor stand in for him.”
