Stick-in-the-mud

DEFINITION

A bore. Someone who ruins a good time. A resolute and strict enforcer of out-dated customs. A stick which is stuck in mud is an immoveable and useless item, so too, a person like that. (Compare to Spoil-sport.)

“I don’t want to invite the neighbor to our party, he is such a stick-in-the-mud he’s no fun to talk with.”
