Stick one’s neck out

DEFINITION

Overreach to succeed. Help. Can also imply helping someone in a dire situation.  Term is a reaction to a turtle which pulls its neck and  head inside a shell during a confrontation, so to stick one’s neck out is the opposite, to come to someone’s assistance or attempt the impossible. (Compare to Throw a line to or Go the extra mile.)

I’m really sticking my neck out for you by complaining to the boss.”
