Sweep under the rug

DEFINITION

Hide. Typically used when an error or misdeed was discovered and everyone involved keeps it hidden from public view. Imagine sweeping dirt under the rug rather than disposing of it properly. (Compare to White wash.)

“I could not believe that the police department swept the entire incident under the rug.”
