Take the fifth

Not answer an official investigation’s question. Fifth’ refers to the U.S. Constitution’s Fifth Amendment which protects someone from testifying against themself, in other words, you don’t have to confess to a crime. Although, technically, a legal term, it is often used as well in any case where someone doesn’t want to admit something.

“When my dad asked if I came home after midnight, I took the fifth.”
