Vote down

DEFINITION

Vote against something. Disapprove of a plan. Democratic processes and governments offer each participant an opportunity to approve or disapprove of suggested decisions, so one gets to vote down (disapprove) or vote up (approve) a project. The term is also loosely used in the context of friends attempting to make a communal decision. (Compare to Shoot down. Contrast with Weigh-in.)

“I vote down Pat’s choice of movies to watch.”
