Wide of the mark

DEFINITION

Huge error. Mark refers to a standard or desired outcome so to be wide of the mark is to miss a successful result. (Compare to Miss by a mile.)

“Well if you think you talked the boss into a raise for everyone, he’s not planning it and instead decided to layoff some employees. I guess you were wide of the mark.”
